Smoked Meatballs

These meatballs are some of the best tasting meatballs you will ever try. Made from a combination of beef and pork they are tender and juicy and packed with flavor. Adding some smoke to the mix just helps add another layer of flavor to an already amazing meal.

This meal is a relatively quick meal to prepare and the end product is so versatile that it makes for a great go to receipe for get togethers. You can use the meatballs for meatball subs, add it to some pasta, or even ust have them by themselves as an appetizer. If you choose to use them by themselves you could also easily try out some different sauces with these as well. Instead of tomato sauce you could use some bbq sauce or some other unique sauce of your making.

Cooking Basics

The first step you will need to do for this recipe is to prepare yoru meatballs. To do this you will need to add all the ingrediants into a bowl except for the tomato sauce and then combine together by hand. Once this is done we are ready to make the meatballs

Meaball Ingredients

You want to shoot for meatballs about 1 inch in diameter. You will want to spray a grate with cooking spray to try to avoid sticking and then add your formed meatballs to the grate. Cooking the meatballs on a grate just gives them more chance to take on that smoky flavor.

Meatballs on Grate

Once you are done creating the meatballs you are ready to fire up the pit. You will need to use indirect heat for this recipe. Preheat your grill / smoker to 225 degrees. If using a grill if you still want that smoky flavor you should check out smoke tubes. They allow you to smoke foods even on a grill. If smoking I would suggest using hickory or pecan if you have it available. Once the grill / smoker is up to temperature you are going to throw your meatballs on for about an hour. You are looking for the meatballs to get to an internal temperature of 155.

Meatballs on Smoker

The meatballs are not quite done at this point. We want the internal temperature to reach 165 degrees before they are complete. At this point you will want to take the meatballs off the grate and add them to an aluminum pan or cast iron pan and add the sauce to them for the last part of the cook. Once you have transferred the meatballs to the pan and added the sauce throw it back on the smoker / grill for another half hour or so to finish coming up to tmeperature.

Once the meatballs have reached temperature remove them from the grill and use them however you like. The last batch of these I made I used for meatball subs and they were delicious.

Final Thoughts

  • Uses - As I mentioned above I love how you can use these for so many things. Pasta, Sandwiches, Appetizers just ot name a few.
  • Sauces - I used premade spagetti sauce as I made these but that is definatley somethng you could experiment with. I bet homemade spagetti sauce on the smoker woudl be amazing. This is something I have not yet tried. You could also just use a premade or homemade bbq sauce if you wanted to use these as an appetizers. I have had meatballs before with a sauce made of grape jelly and ketchup. Sounds like a strange combination but it tasted amazing. If anyone tries something unique for the sauce please let me know. I would love to hear about it.
