Looking for a quick meal on a weekday. You should give this smoked margherita pizza a try. The recipe is very simple and quick to make and the smoky flavor of the sauce mixed with the flavor of fresh basil and mozzarella will ensure this a recipe you will want to use again and again.
I have cooked pizza on the grill before but I tried it for the first time on my smoker just a couple weeks ago and loved it. The thing I liked most about cooking this on the smoker was the smoky flavor that got added to the pizza sauce. It was really noticeable and tasted amazing. Unlike most smoker recipes this is not low and slow. The cooking process only takes about 10 minutes total and it can really be used on any type of pizza you like. I just happen to love Margherita pizza. This recipe can be cooked on a smoker or a grill. Either will give you a really nice crunchy crust that will seem like it has been cooked in a wood fired oven. I made my pizza from scratch but I have also heard just throwing frozen pizzas on to cook this way really improves the flavor of them as well.
Cooking Basics
There are not too many steps to making this recipe. Most of the work is just the prep work of putting the pizza together. Once your pizza is prepared you will need to put it into the smoker to cook. I used a pizza stone to cook my pizze on. You could could also choose to use a pizza pan as well. I preferred the pizza stone as it evens out the heat at the bottom of the pizza helping us get a nice evenly cooked crust.
Final Thoughts
- Alternatives - I am sharing a Margherita pizza recipe because that is one of my favorites but you can make whatever kind of pizza you prefer and use this same cooking method. Cooking the pizza this way will make it seem almost like eating a brick oven pizza. After trying this I think I prefer it to takeout pizza. In my recipe I am just calling for packaged pizza dough and pizza sauce to make it easy to use with not much time. If you have more time and can make fresh dough and sauce from scratch I bet that would taste even better. If any of you try this or with a frozen pizza please post a comment and let me know how it turned out.
